Innovation and technology is what is leading Danieli Group in the challenging process towards a more sustainable steel production. Nowadays, the steel industry is facing a lot of pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and become more environmentally sustainable. Global leader in equipment, plants and services for the metal industry, the Italian company seems to be doing great in this game. Among their latest, and greatest, creations is Q-ONE, a digital power feeder that enables steel producers to optimize their operations, increase efficiency and reduce costs. Based on advanced digital power electronics that provide precise control and a smooth melting process, the technology enables clients to make informed decisions and respond to changes more quickly. One of the most interesting qualities is the fact that it is compatible with renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. This means that, in addition to being an efficient solution, it is also a sustainable and environmentally friendly one. Danieli Group has recently released a video that explains how Q-ONE technology works and why it will be a game-changer for the future of steel industry. The video features interviews with Danieli experts and valuable insights into the company’s technologies and innovations.

Danieli Group’s slogan: “Small investments Big results”

Q-ONE promises a fast return on investment, estimated at 9 to 24 months, which comes with a long list of benefits, including: overall process energy saving up to 15%; 15% reduction of electrode consumption; 10% reduction of Power-on time; extremely high speed control of voltage and current in the furnace; higher power factor thanks to a limited exchange of reactive power with MV network; very low network flicker due to real time control on the arc current variation; high reliability of Q-ONE equipment because of its design modularity. After all, “Small investments big results” is the slogan used by Danieli Group with its customers, which the company supports in the achievement of their goals of environmental sustainability, work safety and improved final product quality through technological innovation and quick returns on investments. The Italian company develops and standardizes high-quality technology packages that are proven to be financially and technically feasible, in terms of anticipated technological, ecological and economic benefits. As a plus, their packages can be installed both on Danieli plants and on most of the equipment supplied by others. Moreover, they respond to the current market’s requirements which now demand specific equipment upgrades instead of extensive greenfield installations. The packages are divided into two types: Plug & Play Tech Packages and Tailor-made Tech Packages. The first ones are structured to easily interface with existing automation, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical installation, with a short-term ROI. The second ones are engineered for executing major equipment upgrades with short-to-medium-term ROI and minimal plant downtime.

Danieli Group’s Minimill: the latest advancements in steelmaking technology

Danieli Group has been contracted by Unitex Steel Mills to provide complete engineering, manufacturing, procurement, supply, and on-site services for a cutting-edge Minimill in the Feni district of Chittagong, Bangladesh. The plant will include state-of-the-art auxiliary systems for fumes and water treatment, as well as advanced electrical and automation technology. The Minimill will have a production capacity of 1 Mtpy, producing long products such as quenched rebars, smooth rounds, equal angles, and channels. The plant’s highly efficient 100-t Digimelter, featuring Q-One digital power feeder and ECS continuous-scrap charging and preheating systems, will enable competitive scrap melting. As the world focuses on reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards a greener economy, the steel industry is increasingly urged to adopt sustainable production methods. In this scenario, Danieli Group is at the forefront of the movement with its advanced Minimill technology. Over the past decades, the Minimill – or MIDA for short – has emerged as one of the most sought-after plants in the steel industry, thanks to its superior quality, high efficiency, and low environmental impact. Its concept is based on Electric Arc Furnace EAF-based steelmaking complexes, providing flexibility, lean organizations, and low transportation costs for local raw-material sourcing and finished products distribution. Initially designed for plants with production capacities of 150-200,000 tpy, the designs have gradually increased in production capability to over 2.9 Mtpy, particularly for flat products. Subsequently, since 2006, the company has taken a significant step forward with the integrated Minimills, which include DRI plants, EAFs, CCMs, and rolling mills, all connected through a continuous energy-saving process and compact layout.

Reducing environmental impact while maintaining high-quality production: Danieli Group’s commitment

A significant step forward in sustainable steel production, Danieli Group’s integrated Minimills were first supplied in 2006, offering a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional Blast Furnace integrated plants. The company’s Micromill takes this concept even further, offering ultra-compact design and extremely low transformation costs to produce 250-300,000 tpy of long products at an overall investment per ton typical of a 1.0-1.5 Mtpy Minimill. These “regional mills” transform local scrap into finished products for local markets, providing additional savings in transportation costs, representing a cost-effective solution for environmentally conscious companies. Today, as environmental regulations become more stringent, industrial producers need reliable partners with knowledge, experience, and commitment to ensure sustainability and competitiveness without slowing down production. Danieli Group’s continuous efforts to research and develop solutions for environmental sustainability address fume treatment and noise reduction, water treatment and consumption decrease, energy saving through emissions reduction, and solid waste treatment and recovery. This has made Danieli Group the go-to provider for sustainable steel production worldwide.

Technological innovation and sustainability: the values behind Danieli Group’s project in Brazil

ArcelorMittal reaffirms its trust in Danieli Group’s innovative systems and technologies, by commissioning the installation of a new water treatment plant in the Barra Mansa site, Brazil.

Danieli Group

Danieli Group’s project for ArcelorMittal in Brazil

The world’s leading steel and mining company ArcelorMittal ordered the installation of a water treatment plant in Brazil to Danieli Group, hence placing trust in their innovative solutions and selecting their new water treatment technologies for the implementation of the Barra Mansa site. The Italian firm will supply a 400,000-tpy medium section mill which is going to be installed in the brownfield. Implemented with DanFilters and exclusive Zero Scale Pit -ZSP, the new water treatment plant will replace the one serving the dismissed rolling mill. By significantly diminishing civil work, Danieli Group’s ZSP will allow a drastic reduction of construction costs. Most of the scale contained in the cooling water comes from the firsts and the more critical rolling stands. Placed under the rolling mill, ZSP collects water containing rolling mill scale mainly generated during the first rolling steps. It removes the scale from the underground flume and then raises it to the mill floor where it is collected in standard skips. Not only ZSP will guarantee CapEx savings and no extra OpEx costs, but it will also simplify maintenance operations. Danfilters, Danieli’s fast-filtering patented filters, are included in the project as well: three 3.800-mm-dia DanFilters are in fact going to replace four 5.000-mm dia old filters. Startup of the new rolling mill and water treatment plant is scheduled for the third trimester of 2024.

Research, advanced technologies and innovative plants: the mission of Danieli Group

Danieli company was established by Mario Danieli in 1948 in Buttrio, a village located in Northern Italy, where he started as manufacturer of small shears and anvils. Today Danieli Group is recognized throughout the world for the development of low-impact innovative technological solutions. In addition to special steel production, the company manufactures and installs machines and plants used by ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries and by energy production industries. Its reliability is based on research, know-how and experience. Danieli Group is able to provide high-tech plants which are also innovative and carbon neutral. The company’s high-quality performances and specialised services are very complex. Research, investments in advanced technologies and the development of innovative plants are strategic pillars for the preservation and the consolidation of the Group leadership in the global market. Their motto is “Innov-Action to be a step ahead in CapEx and OpEx”, meaning that they put innovation into action in order to achieve even higher level of quality and standards in every aspect of their work: from planning, designing and manufacturing to erection, commissioning and service. In 2020 the company gave birth to the world's first Twin-MIDA ECR plant for the production of 1.6 Mtpy of bars and wirerod in Pinggang (China) and designed the world's most technologically-advanced wirerod mill based on the “zero-man-on-the-floor” approach, whereas in 2021 they made the first electrically-heated roller-hearth soaking furnace for billets.
