In its twelfth edition, this national competition aims to facilitate student orientation by promoting integration between schools and businesses, especially in the context of new digital and automation technologies.

The connection between schools and companies is a key element in preparing students for the professional world, simultaneously providing a significant boost to the companies themselves. Danieli Group, a leading global industrial machinery manufacturer, is steadfast in its commitment to projects with schools and universities to nurture talent. One such initiative is the “Fabbricando” project, now in its twelfth edition, offering support for youth orientation and encouraging access to STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The project also aims to enhance awareness of local activities and production processes, fostering integration between schools and businesses. Specifically, guided by teachers, students will present innovative works, focusing on environmental, energy, digital, industrial automation, and communication themes. “Fabbricando” originated in 2005 “from an idea and the need of Acciaierie Bertoli Safau-Danieli Group to root itself more deeply in its territory and seek a close synergy with the surrounding environment”, noted Paola Perabò, Executive Vice President of Human Resources & Academy at Danieli Group. She added that “thanks to the collaboration with one of the schools in the Province of Udine, the idea of creating a competition aimed at promoting awareness of local activities and production processes and fostering integration between schools and businesses was born. This project quickly evolved from a local to a national context”. In this synergy between business, education, and the local community, the Group is committed to continuing its efforts to help develop talent.

The four calls of Danieli Group’s “Fabbricando”

The “Fabbricando” project by Danieli Group engages schools of all levels, with four calls targeting: nursery, primary, and lower secondary schools in Friuli-Venezia Giulia; upper secondary schools and technical institutes; ITS Academy; from the past edition, also university courses in primary education sciences. Each project will be assessed by a dedicated committee, which will award the winners in each of the four calls in Udine on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Applications can be submitted from September 18 to December 31, 2023, on the website www.concorsofabbricando.it. On the same site, participants can fill out the participation form until March 8, 2024, and send their works to Danieli Academy, accompanied by a report of up to five pages in the most appropriate format. The fourth call aims to promote and enhance the training of competent teachers in scientific disciplines for nursery and primary schools. As highlighted by Danieli Group, candidates must have defended their thesis in the academic years 2020/2021, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023 (by March 8, 2024), and should not have exceeded 30 years of age at the time of the thesis defense. The competition will reward research work that can provide a contribution in terms of transversality, connection with real-world problems, stimulation of scientific learning, and can also be a significant example from the perspective of STEM subject teaching. The thesis, in hard copy and in digital copy on a computer medium, must reach Danieli Academy by March 8, 2024, accompanied by a photocopy of an identity document, the participation form, and the privacy information. The latter two modules can be downloaded from the project’s website.

Danieli Group will build a maxi green steel hub in Austria

Danieli Group confirms once again its world leadership position in technologies for the production of green steel: the Buttrio based multinational company was commissioned the construction of two electric arc furnace by the giant Austrian Voestalpine Group.

Danieli Group chosen by Voestalpine AG for “Greentec steel” project

After the orders placed in Holland for Tata and in Germany for Salgitter, Danieli Group was chosen by another steel production giant like the Austrian Voestalpine Group for the creation of "Greentec steel", an ambitious project involving, in a first phase, the construction of an electric arc furnace in both Linz and Donawitz plants. Austrian Voestalpine Group is a giant listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange since 1995, owner of 500 companies located in more than 50 countries, with 18.2 billion in revenues, 2.5 billion in Ebitda and 51,200 employees worldwide. Thanks to this technological conversion, the Group will be able to reduce its emissions by about 30%, saving the environment almost 4 million tons of CO2 per year. The overall investment is worth 1.5 billion euros and it promises an impressive economic and employment impact, equal to 767 million euros and 9,000 jobs, only considering the construction phase of the two Eaf plants. The construction sites actually began in the last few days with the laying of the first stone for the construction of the electric arc furnace (Eaf) in Donawitz, where the works will begin in 2024, once the area now subject to demolition will be all set up, and they will be completed in three years. Once operational, the EAF will produce approximately 850,000 tons of CO2-reduced steel per year. The dimensions of the project are considerable: the two construction areas are equivalent to approximately 10 football fields. As for the program, it consists of 11 independent implementation projects, involving a project team of approximately 75 internal and external experts.

The architect of the green revolution will be, as mentioned, Danieli Group which won the tender for the plant design and will therefore be responsible for the engineering, the production and the commissioning of the Eafs, using Digimelter technology. “By awarding the contract and ordering the supply of the main equipment - said Franz Kainersdorfer, member of the Board of Directors of Voestalpine AG and Head of the Metalworking division – we have laid the technological foundations for tomorrow’s steel production. Together with Danieli, we will now begin the technical planning for this challenging project”. In parallel to the construction of the new plants, Voestalpine is working on the energy supply side. A fundamental requirement for the transition to electric arc technology is the availability of green electricity at competitive prices. In addition to signing supply contracts with local suppliers, the Austrian group is installing photovoltaic systems to expand its renewable energy production capacity and developing, together with regional partners, wind turbines, hydraulic generators and other photovoltaic systems.

Stahl Gerlafingen implements cutting-edge K-Weld technology from Danieli Group

Danieli Group’s cutting-edge technology continues to be in high demand, with Stahl Gerlafingen placing an order for its fourth K-Weld machine. This latest order is part of the new, sixth-generation billet welders awarded to the Group in the past 12 months.

The reputation of its cutting-edge technology and engineering expertise has once again been recognized, as Stahl Gerlafingen selected the Group for its latest project. Stahl Gerlafingen’s decision to choose the Group for the installation of a K-Weld machine at its plant in Switzerland marks the fourth order for the new, sixth-generation billet welders awarded to Danieli Group in the past 12 months. The upcoming billet welding machine will directly connect to the new reheating furnace, feeding the existing rolling mill in an endless mode. The installation will also feature a new 2-MW Danieli Automation Q-Heat system, optimizing billet temperature after welding, prior to entering the roughing mill. What sets the sixth-generation of Danieli-patented billet welders apart is the innovative cartridge design housing the welding clamps. This feature enables convenient clamp replacements in the workshop, significantly reducing downtime by 50% compared to conventional billet welders. Additionally, a new tension control system accelerates joint welding, resulting in enhanced mechanical characteristics of both the joint and the rolled stock. The adoption of endless welding rolling allows more stable rolling conditions and improved plant yield, eliminating the need for billet head and tail cropping and eliminating inter-billet gaps. Scheduled for startup in the first quarter of 2024, the new-generation billet welder will further bolster Danieli Group’s reputation for cutting-edge steel manufacturing technology.

ASUFC receives support from ABS Acciaierie (Danieli Group) for Udine Hospital donation

ABS Acciaierie and Danieli Group have donated a total of 800,000 euros, which, combined with the 190,000 euros provided by the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, will improve the operating rooms in Section Five of “Santa Maria della Misericordia” Hospital in Udine. The official signing took place on June 29 at the ABS Acciaierie offices. It has been announced that the completion of the project, including the installation of the new equipment and various tests, is expected to be done by spring 2024.

The chosen equipment, a Siemens Artis Zee system, will be housed in the new hemodynamics room and will be used for electrophysiology procedures, hemodynamics, and transcatheter heart valve implants. The addition of this equipment expands and reinforces the hospital’s angiography resources for Interventional Cardiology, increasing the number of units from two to three. With the donation from ABS Acciaierie and Danieli Group, there will be an increase in available resources for both emergency situations and maintenance periods of the equipment. This collaboration underscores the commitment of the Group to the well-being of the community and the enhancement of healthcare services in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The fact that Danieli Group puts so much emphasis on education and training is also evidenced by the good number of projects launched by the company to train young graduates as well as to further improve the skills of its employees.

Born in 1995, INDE – Industrial Design is one of the projects promoted by the company through the strategic corporate tool Danieli Academy. It trains every year 40 young technicians and it gives them the opportunity to join Danieli Group. Danieli Academy, which by the way was strongly supported by the Chairman Gianpietro Benedetti, provides in-house training and guarantees 96,000 hours of soft, technical, managerial and safety skills training. The courses are taught by 500 educators, half of which are internal and specifically trained for the job. The contest “Fabbricando”, which has recently reached its 11th edition, is addressed to schools. It aims at facilitating the orientation of children and accelerate that of teens towards STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). It is divided into four segments: one dedicated to pre-schools, primary schools and middle schools; one dedicated to high schools and technical institutes; one for ITS Academy and one for university students. The initiative gives them the chance to get a closer view of local productive realities, also reinforcing the link between schools and companies while presenting innovative and inclusive projects related to the fields of environment, energy, digital, industrial automation and communication. The 2023 edition met with great success: there were 39 works presented from 22 schools coming from 6 different Italian regions, with a total of 449 students and 50 teachers.

Situated at Salzgitter’s renowned facility in Lower Saxony, known for its production of high-quality flat products, this hydrogen-ready plant signifies Salzgitter’s transition from traditional ironmaking to electric steelmaking, with a remarkable target of achieving a 95% reduction in carbon emissions. With an impressive capacity of 2.1 million tons per year, the advanced Energiron DR plant will generate top-notch direct reduced iron (DRI) to be utilized in the production of exceptional hot-strip coils through a newly established electric steel meltshop. This comprehensive order also includes the innovative Hytemp® system, enabling the pneumatic transport and hot charging of DRI into the electric arc furnace (EAF) at temperatures reaching up to 600°C, further enhancing operational flexibility. “To be beside Salzgitter Flachstahl in this outstanding project that will be a lighthouse for the steel industry decarbonization”, said Giacomo Mareschi Danieli, CEO of Danieli Group.

The use of Energiron technology, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli Group, marks a definitive stride toward a green steel era, offering the ability to incorporate varying amounts of hydrogen, up to 100%, as an alternative reducing agent. This transformative technology promises a significant reduction in the carbon footprint without necessitating modifications to the existing plant configuration, which is already mature and well-established. The hybrid design of the Energiron technology allows for the utilization of natural gas as a reducing agent, facilitating the controlled supply of the minimum required carbon during the DR process. This technology also enables the capture and utilization of CO2, not only further reducing the plant’s carbon emissions but also generating an additional revenue stream for the facility’s operations. The launch of the new Energiron DRI plant is scheduled for July 2026, representing a significant milestone in advancing hard-to-abate industry decarbonization efforts in Europe. As part of the project’s ambitious plan, a second Energiron DRP will be installed at the same Salzgitter site in a subsequent phase, showcasing the commitment to long-term sustainable steel production.

Gianpietro Benedetti's career at Danieli Group began in 1961 as a design engineer in one of the company’s technical offices. After two years, he was promoted to project engineer and eventually became the plant start-up engineer in 1966. His expertise in the field led to his appointment as Research & Development Director in 1976 and Sales Director in 1982. In 1986, he was named Managing Director of Danieli Group, a position he held for four years before becoming Group President and CEO. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Danieli Group and, since September 2017, he is also Executive Board Chairman of Danieli & C. S.p.A. Additionally, Gianpietro Benedetti is the President of the Technical Secondary School's Mechanical and Aeronautics Section in Udine. His contributions to the steel industry have earned him numerous accolades, including the Tadeusz Sendzimir Memorial Medal from AIST (Association for Iron & Steel Technology) in 2018.

Since 2010, he has also been President of “ITS - Technical Secondary School - New Made-in-Italy Technologies, Mechanical and Aeronautics Section” of Udine, Italy. He began his career at Danieli Group in 1961 as a design engineer. After managing several departments, he was named Co-Chief Executive Officer in 1986 and General Manager in 1991, before ultimately becoming Chief Executive Officer in 1999. In September 2017, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors and of the Executive Board of the Group. The world’s leading steel and mining company ArcelorMittal ordered the installation of a water treatment plant in Brazil to Danieli Group, hence placing trust in their innovative solutions and selecting their new water treatment technologies for the implementation of the Barra Mansa site. The Italian firm will supply a 400,000-tpy medium section mill which is going to be installed in the brownfield. Implemented with DanFilters and exclusive Zero Scale Pit -ZSP, the new water treatment plant will replace the one serving the dismissed rolling mill. By significantly diminishing civil work, Danieli Group’s ZSP will allow a drastic reduction of construction costs. Most of the scale contained in the cooling water comes from the firsts and the more critical rolling stands. Placed under the rolling mill, ZSP collects water containing rolling mill scale mainly generated during the first rolling steps. It removes the scale from the underground flume and then raises it to the mill floor where it is collected in standard skips. Not only ZSP will guarantee CapEx savings and no extra OpEx costs, but it will also simplify maintenance operations. Danfilters, Danieli’s fast-filtering patented filters, are included in the project as well: three 3.800-mm-dia DanFilters are in fact going to replace four 5.000-mm dia old filters. Startup of the new rolling mill and water treatment plant is scheduled for the third trimester of 2024.
