Are the Italian companies in step with the times of the digital revolution? Digital revolution will change company boundaries: Vittorio Massone’s point of view

According to Vittorio Massone, to think that the digital revolution has already reached its peak is a mistake: indeed, the expert in management believes that the effects of the digital revolution have not yet had their full impact on the social and economic system.
Vittorio Massone

Vittorio Massone on digitization: "Slower sectors can have a profound impact"

Agriculture, industry and logistics are those sectors that only in recent years have started to be affected by the digital revolution. The most evident changes of the transformation, indeed, have occurred in the consumer area and in the world of entertainment so far. In his editorial published in Lettera43, the expert in digital transformation Vittorio Massone explained that the revolution will have its full impact only in the next twenty years. The transformation is already starting to affect the areas of supply chain, operations, business to business and business to government, as "these sectors are slower in changing", said Vittorio Massone , "but they can have a profound impact across the economic field". The changes would lead to an ICT-driven society, as well as to a radical transformation of business models: in order to prepare themselves, companies have to take into account new competitors, as those represented by the generation of "digital natives". There will be relevant changes in corporate roles too, as rigid organizational models will be challenged by the revolution: as the manager wrote, attention will be focused on professional figures who are in direct contact with the customer, as well as on those who are related to technology, and, in addition, a greater inclusion will involve stakeholders.

Innovation, Vittorio Massone explains why Italy is likely to be at a standstill

Within such an economic context, where most small and medium-sized enterprises are still reluctant to digital innovations, Italy runs the risk of losing even more ground in the competitive race. According to Vittorio Massone, a manager with a deep experience in successful turnaround operations, and who worked with top clients the likes of Poste Italiane and Seat Pagine Gialle, very few Italian companies in the unregulated sectors have today the scale necessary to play "a leading role in the next twenty years". These leading roles are likely to be lacking both for new market areas and in the capital market, and, in addition, strategic factors such as patents, data and key skills will be fundamental in the coming years. Considering also investments in R&D, as well as the so-called critical mass, it is easy to predict the future difficulties that Italy could have. Finally, the expert wrote that, in order to remain competitive, it will be essential to focus on product innovation, to improve the customer experience, and, furthermore, to reduce cost-to-serve. The editorial published in Lettera43 was written by Vittorio Massone, an expert in digital transformation, with over 25 years of experience in strategic consultancy. During his career he was involved in particularly complex operations in the functional areas of strategy, organization, merger and acquisitions, customer experience, operational improvement, procurement. With an innovative managerial vision based on team "diversity", he is currently dedicated to supporting the digital transformation processes of important traditional companies, as well as to facilitating the growth of the "digital native" ones. Since February 2020 he has been Vice President of the Board of Directors of Alkemy.

Vittorio Massone: the digital transformation has just started

Vittorio Massone’ effective and informed point of view on the state of digital transformation and the changes that need to be made to deal with it.

The challenge of the digital revolution will affect all sectors: this is a challenge that has just started and will have its full impact only in the next 20 years. In his recent editorial published in Lettera43, Vittorio Massone discusses the current situation and the changes that the Italian industry will necessarily have to make in order to remain competitive.
Vittorio Massone

Vittorio Massone: the digital revolution has just started

We now feel surrounded by a digitized world, made of technology and innovation. Currently supporting the digital transformation process of important traditional companies, Vittorio Massone proposes his point of view on the matter by means of an article published in Lettera43: we are only at the beginning of the real revolution. "Those who believe that digital technology has already brought about a great change in our lives will be surprised to know that what we are experiencing is only the beginning of a radical transformation in business and society" writes the expert. "The changes that have occurred in the past 20 years of the digital revolution will have their full impact in the next 20 years, and this will lead to an ICT-driven economy and society, in all sectors". As Vittorio Massone explains, the most evident changes have occurred in the consumer area so far, but the transformation is already starting to involve the areas of operations, supply chain, business to business and business to government. These sectors are slower in changing, but can have a profound impact across the economic field. The article published in Letter43 underlines that all sectors will be affected by the digital revolution: starting from financial services, insurance, IT, to later involving those sectors that are considered "mature" as logistics, agriculture, and industry. In order to prepare themselves for changes, companies must first adapt to changes in the business model, and then take into account new competitors. "The motto is 'your margin is my opportunity'. Competition will be made to acquire end customers, strategic assets, critical skills and so on".

Vittorio Massone's perspective on the Italian context

To remain competitive will not be an easy challenge to overcome in the new digitalized world, in particular with regards to aspects such as "cost structure, investments in R&D and technology, scale required to acquire and manage skills, patents, data, access to raw materials, strategic assets, and distribution channels: in other words, all future strategic and competitive factors". In his article, Vittorio Massone writes that making changes will play a fundamental role in remaining attractive in the capital market, and the situation in Italy is not easy. "Within the unregulated sectors, very few Italian companies today have the scale necessary to play a leading role in the next 20 years". It will be essential to focus on product innovation and improve the customer experience in order to remain competitive. In addition, cost-to-serve will have to be reduced. There will be a strong change in corporate roles too, as attention will be focused on those professional figures who are in direct contact with the customer and on those who are related to innovation and technology. The manager's role will be changed as well, as it is still too rigid within a system which, on the contrary, will be based on fluidity. Another key factor is machine learning, which will change the way talent is viewed. There will be a different approach towards team-working, division of labor, compensation, and evaluation of results. "There is no doubt", writes Vittorio Massone, "that all the changes considered will challenge traditional and vertically rigid organizational models. Company boundaries themselves will have a different shape, through an integration process between the company and the ecosystem in which it operates".

Charles Schwab to acquire TD Ameritrade, Vittorio Massone: “Competition is going to be fierce between incumbents and new players”

Charles Schwab Corporation acquires TD Ameritrade: Vittorio Massone comments on the creation of a new financial mammoth.

Vittorio Massone, an expert in management and digital transformation, comments on one of the most important corporate transactions in recent years: the acquisition of TD Ameritrade by Charles Schwab Corporation.

Schwab-Ameritrade merger, Vittorio Massone comments on the creation of the new financial giant

"The initiative taken by Charles Schwab against digital disruption in asset management is very interesting": this is the first comment from Vittorio Massone, an expert in business and digital transformation, after the spreading of the news on the acquisition of TD Ameritrade by Charles Schwab Corporation. In an all-stock deal valued at $26 billion, the bank and stock brokerage firm Charles Schwab Corporation will acquire rival TD Ameritrade, whose shareholders will receive 1.0837 Schwab shares for each share they own, with a 17% premium. "It is clear that no one today can predict how the situation will evolve, but this is proof that incumbents have adequate tools to defend themselves and react": the merger of the two companies, that is expected to take effect in 2020, will create a brokerage giant with more than $5 trillion in client assets, and more than 24 million client accounts. Suffice it to say that, after the merger announcement, Schwab shares jumped 8%, while TD Ameritrade's stock shot up 16% higher. But, according to Massone, it is more than a numbers game, as it is fundamental "to use dimensions to create further efficiency and scale in the creation of new platforms - this deal aims to achieve this specific result - and, rather than defending what cannot be defended, it is better to quickly evolve business models according to the market". Furthermore, he underlined that, just like Schwab has been doing for a long time, hiring people with digital skills and reducing or, sometimes, eliminating brokerage fees proves to be a winning choice. "The main objective", said Vittorio Massone, "is not to lose, but to increase the client base and their loyalty, making things very difficult for new players. Sooner or later, these will have to find ways to create profit, and obviously this can only be done by means of motivated and cohesive Executive teams and patient Shareholders".
